Specialist Farm Accounting, Farm Management Consulting, Accounting & Taxation , DGS Accounting Ltd , Greta Valley, New Zealand
Sally has over 35 years of experience working in office and accounting environments. Past employment includes being a land girl, an accounts clerk, office management roles, credit control roles, being a personal assistant, a medical typist/secretary/receptionist, and a business owner with her husband Phil. Sally and Phil live in Waipara and have three, now adult, children.

Sally first worked for us between 2005 and 2009 when she was employed as an Accounts Technician. After a two and a half year break Sally returned to our employ, first as our part-time Receptionist, and later became full-time when she moved back into an Accounts Technician role and a GST Account Client Manager.

She has over 25 years of experience using CRS Software Cashmanager accounting software Sally is our go-to guru when it comes to Cashmanager.  In June 2017 Sally became an Accredited Cashmanger Rural Specialist which also saw DGS becoming an Accredited Practice in Cashmanager Principles. Sally also manages the majority of our GST clients using both MYOB Banklink software and Cashmanager.

Sally first looked to being employed in the rural sector back in 1983 when she studied for and gained a Diploma in Rural Secretarial Practice from Lincoln College. She is a bit of a dab-hand with excel spreadsheets, is an accomplished touch typist, and has an affinity with farmers and people living in rural communities and the challenges they face.

Being a farmers daughter and a farmers wife, and having been born and bought up in the Hurunui (Amuri) District, Sally is well versed with the farming lingo, financial requirements, and special position and privilege of living and working in a rural community.

An avid member of Young Farmers in her youth Sally went on a six month WEA exchange to the USA when she was 18 and like a lot of young Kiwis went on to travel across the globe.

Sally has always enjoyed being part of the rural community she lives in, spending many hours as a volunteer.  One of Sally's first volunteer roles was as Secretary for the then Hurunui Rugby Football Sub-Union.

B.C. [before children] Sally became involved with the local Glenmark Netball Club as a player and a volunteer,  which she continued A.C. [after children] and has a favourite photograph which shows her eldest daughter, Chelsea, and Sally both in their Glenmark Netball uniforms.

Sally's volunteer roles made a natural progression - from local Plunket to Hurunui Plunket (up to Acting Area Councillor for Canterbury Plunket), through Play Centre, to primary school - often the volunteer roles of a rural mother follow the stages and ages of her children. The Thomson childrens  Waipara School years found P.T.A. duties soon turning to B.O.T. duties for Sally who spent eight years as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees for Waipara School. 2017 saw Sally and her husband Phil both on the Waipara School Centennial Committee; 2015 marked Sally's heavy involvement with the Glenmark Settlement 100 year celebrations; and in the past Sally has written/compiled three local histories that of the Hurunui Branch of the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society (75th Jubilee), The Culverden Rugby Football Club (75th Jubilee), and the Hurunui Netball Association (50th Jubilee).

In her spare time Salls enjoys family history/genealogy, reading and handcrafts, all of which play second fiddle to her great love of gardening, which saw Sally owning and operating the Amberley Flowers & Garden Centre business for four years.

From the 489 hectare Mt Donald property they sold in 2006 to their 44ha farm[let] up the Glenmark Drive they currently live on Sally and Philip love the rural area they live in. While not farming full-time Philip keeps busy with their business Waipara Mowing Limited which services the grass mowing needs of clients from Hawarden to Motunau, to Amberley and as far south as Loburn.

Sally has a bit of a sense of humour, is known to use good old fashion country language at times (although keeps a very professional demeanour on the phone to our clients) and says that when she grows up would quite like to be in a forensic accounting role, or retired!  Sally then jokes that with the on-going drought conditions that have been experienced in our area lately that even between the farm[let] and the mowing business Phil is all but retired already!
